Every time I move to a new city, I get excited. Then I think: here we go again.

Meeting people. Making friends. Learning how things work. Finding my place.

From Colombia to the UK, where I lived from 2005 to 2007, then Miami, St. Pete and now Mexico, I’ve had to do this more than once. It’s an amazing challenge. It can also be tiring, even when the move is something you wanted.

At work, you’re expected to contribute while you’re still figuring people out. Outside work, you’re trying to build a life. Sometimes, somewhere between the two, you wonder whether you’re good enough.

Living in different cultures has made me more thoughtful about how I speak and approach team members. I can’t assume that the way I communicated in one place will work the same way somewhere else.

Being an executive adds something else. I sometimes call it the “loneliness of power.” Everyone is busy, and being surrounded by people doesn’t necessarily mean you feel connected. Your position may also make someone hesitate to approach you, especially early in their career.

I don’t always know what creates that distance. But I can pay attention to how I approach people.

One question I like to ask is: “What would you love?”

I want to understand how they see themselves and what they wish for, beyond the role they have today. I don’t want every conversation to be about something we need to deliver.

I’m still finding my place each time I move. Asking that question helps me get to know the people I’m working with while I do.
